Flax seed oil does not contain significant quantities of lignans. Each serving is enriched to provide 30 mg of SDG lignans, equivalent to consuming 10g of whole flax seeds. SDG lignans are phytoestrogen antioxidants composed of two cinnamic acid residues. Flax contains many time more lignans than any other source, including barley, oats and millet. As antioxidants, SDG lignans protect against damaging hydroxlyl ions. SDG lignans are metabolized by intestinal bacteria into enterolactone and enterodiol.
